Day 212

Mugshot: Paul, 4 x 4 inch oil on panel
© 2013 Kathleen Coy

This mug is my dear friend Paul Koch - a kindred creative spirit, potter extraordinaire and husband to Carol Jean. Here are Paul and Carol Jean's mugs sitting together on my Paint On Easel, signed by Karin Jurick herself. I had so much fun painting that beard, I can envision a whole series of portraits of men with great beards. What a show that would be...

  1. My brother has a great beard if you ever want to paint his portrait I can send you some source photos.

I love the expression is Paul's eyes...they look very kind. Wonderful portraits...

  2. Oh yeah... this one is really awesome! Love the beard, too... but the head is just plain SOLID.

BTW... if you follow Carol Marine's blog you should check out her last post... talking about artist's block- interesting...

  3. Where do you do your mugshots? I've looked through your archives, but I must have missed it. How long are you working on each head? (If you don't mind me asking).
They are really nice and I love painting heads. Would love to do this...

  4. Thanks, Maria and Allison!

Allison, all the mugshots are painted in the studio from photos. It just works out better for me right now, as I don't have the room or the lighting equipment to paint people from life here. You probably already know this, but the Hilton Head Gang mugs are those of us who took Karin Jurick's workshop last fall at Hilton Head Island, and the coordinator sends us a new photo each week to paint. I also plan to paint more mugs of people I know, just because they are so fun!

  5. Oh, and these mugshots take me about 5 or 6 hours total, usually. I think I had one that took 7, and a few that took 3 or 4.
